The capital city of Scotland is one of the most beautiful cities in the United Kingdom; full of history, quirky shops and amazing architecture. It houses the Scottish government and over 4,500 ‘listed’ buildings, including the impressive Edinburgh Castle. Tourists flock to the city a number of times every year for the numerous festivals held there.

Things you must see & do

Edinburgh Castle and the military tattoo are the most widely known tourist attractions of this area and are both certainly worth seeing. The castle is huge with loads of information aimed at all age groups, as well as spectacular views of the rest of the city.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is held every year in August and features many local and international bands. Over 200,000 people watch the tattoo each year and it has never been cancelled.

St Giles Cathedral is another must see if you have even the smallest amount of interest in architecture and beautiful buildings. The stained glass windows are absolutely magnificent.

Insider tips

Most of the sights to see in the compact centre of town are within 15 minutes’ walk of each other, however there are some steep hills, so wear good walking shoes.

If you’re keen to save some money and see a huge range of Edinburgh’s sights, then get an Edinburgh Pass to over 30 of the city’s top attractions.

Edinburgh is a food lover’s heaven with something for everyone throughout the city. Only places to avoid are the touristy cafes and restaurants around the castle and in the Grassmarket area.
